Why we have to learn about Metathesis ?

Metathesis is responsible for some common speech errors. Because, there are many people who pronounce the word different with the supposed is pronounced. Sometimes, speech errors make miss communication between speaker and listener. So, we have to learn about metathesis to know why there are differences pronounciation in a word ? how metathesis can be happened?

The author hopes, after learning about it, we can find out why there are differences in the pronunciation of sounds in a word. Then, when talking with someone who has a different pronunciation of sounds in a word, there will be no confussion and miss communication, so communication can go smoothly.

What is Metathesis ?

Etymology: From the Greek, "to transpose".

Phonological rules may also reorder sequences of phonemes in a word, in which case they are called metathesis.

How Metathesis can be happened ?

1.      Slip of tongue

·         Iron                 > Iorn

·         Cavalry           > Calvary

2.      Many variant of the original word

·         For some speakers of English, the word ask is pronounced /ˈæks/ but it should be /ˈæsk/.

·         At least two presidents of the United States have applied a metathesis rule to the word nuclear, which many Americans pronounce nuclear /ˈnjuːkliə(r)/, but is pronounced nucelar /ˈnjuːkjələr/.

3.      Children’s Speech

·         Animal            > Aminal

Typical shifters are nasal sounds. For example, if [m] and [n] find themselves in the same word, they might swap places.

·         Spaghetti         > Psketti
